I'm 3 years old!

For Nathan's 3rd birthday, I asked him what he wanted to do. He said he wanted to go to Van Saun Park and eat fries. I love how kids enjoy the simple things in life at this age. So we spent the morning at the park riding / watching the train, rode the carousel, went to the playground and then stopped by McDonalds to pick up chicken nuggets and fries for lunch. Then we celebrated over the weekend with family and he got to open all of his presents.

At his big boy well visit. He was so calm and well behaved, super proud of him. This is the first time that they had him stand for measuring height instead of lying down. He also stood on a real scale and got his blood pressure taken for the first time. He is 37" (39th percentile) and 26 lbs 16 oz (7th percentile).

Family Time in NYC, Pittsburgh and NJ

Lots of family time in September! Jessica, Chris and Viv came to visit and we met up at Victorian Gardens for a group play date with the Adames. It was so fun, I never knew there was a little amusement park in Central Park. The things you discover once you have a child.

We're ready for our 9 hour train ride to Pittsburgh! The day started even earlier with a bus ride to Port Authority, then one subway stop to Penn Station. We made it though, with some Dunkin Donuts to share on the train. I brought plenty of "new" items like play-doh set, sticker book, iPad with games and downloaded VBS videos. He did really well and enjoyed all the things we did, but by the 6th hour I was pooped, I can only play with play-doh for so long.

He even took a nice nap on the train!

We went to the snack car for some cheese pizza + pepperoni and crackers. It's what I have to do when they only have cheese pizza.

Nathan got the other 2 boys into the VBS song, Hello Again too! They would sing it everywhere over and over again. https://youtu.be/pPTjwe44gZA

Date with mom - went out to a nice lunch at one of my favorite places and then did some shopping in the area. Neither one of us gets the opportunity to shop these days, so it was a real blessing to do it together.

Pao Pao has so much patience doing puzzles with Nathan, I think he improved a lot during the time she was visiting.

Thanks for coming to stay with us, Pao Pao. See you next time!

2 Years and 11 Months - Summer Outings

One day I suddenly noticed that Nathan was speaking in full sentences. It's amazing how fast they go from 2-3 words at a time to speaking sentences! The human brain at this age is brilliant!

He didn't show any interest in the songs during VBS, but loved singing them everywhere else.

We still let him nap in our bed because he's so cute and cuddly.

2 Years and 10 Months - Chen Reunion Bushkill PA

Lots of fun outings this month! We had our Chen reunion in PA, where we went to the pool, frolicked in the meadows, played with bubbles, built a fire and mined for gems. Nathan really enjoys the Kidville sports class for 2 and 3 year olds. It's very creative and incorporates music, coordination and cooperation in a fun way. I got a Groupon deal for a few trial classes because it's just too pricey to do long-term. We also discovered Catch Air which is a huge indoor playground. Even I enjoy going down the long slide and playing in the ball pit.

When we would do home school "puzzles" together, sometimes I'd get frustrated because I feel like Nathan isn't trying or is not getting something that I think is very simple. He would see that I'm frustrated and say, "Mama, happy?" Then I'd feel bad and remind myself that I need to be more patient. It's kind of sweet that he gets upset when I'm not happy, but it's also a bit annoying when he's the cause and keeps asking, "Mama, happy?" until I say that I'm happy.

Nathan is really into helping with the groceries. He won't let anyone touch the bags after we bring them upstairs. https://youtu.be/Fgjhhx-rtq4

He loves Daddy's milk tea from Taipei Noodle House! https://youtu.be/iHpj9vka2Z4

I like how all the other kids are running around having fun and Nathan is "stuck", LOL.

He is so happy in this class. I am super proud of him.

He found the word hibachi really hilarious.

We finally got some birds coming to eat seeds!

We went to a BBQ with small kiddie pool and he was exhausted after we left. But he really wanted to keep eating Doritos, so the ensuing fight against sleep was hilarious.

I really tried to not give in to his request of bubble gun, but he always wants to play with the neighbor's, so I finally got him one. And of course, he still wants to play with the neighbor's when they are out in the yard. Then ours broke a couple weeks later. These things are not made to last.

Someone invited us to their town pool. It was really nice! Nathan didn't want to "swim", he just liked playing with the water (like he would at home in the bath tub).

2 Years and 9 Months - SLEEEEEEP!!!!

This past month, we reached new milestones! Nathan now falls asleep on his own, in his own room, and doesn't get up until 7am! After he stayed overnight at his grandparents' one day, I found out that he can sleep through the night in his own room there. So I thought maybe the reason he runs into our bed during the middle of the night is because he wakes up and sees us. I decided to set up twin mattresses on the floor of his room (my office) and voila! he really slept through the night. I couldn't believe it at first and it took my body at least a week to adjust to not waking up during the night. It felt so nice to wake up to Nathan calling me, "Mama! It's green!" and realize how much continuous sleep I got. (I bought him a clock that turns green when it's time to wake up, and he actually keeps himself entertained until it turns green. Awesome invention.) Because he doesn't wake up during the night now, he also naturally stopped asking for nie-nie. Not that he was asking for it often anyway, but after sleeping in his own room, he was completed weaned.

We also started the home school curriculum kit that I bought from Timberdoodle. It's nice to have some structure to the things I teach him, and it helps me to see what he "gets" and what he doesn't. Sometimes I forget that he's not even 3 and get frustrated when he doesn't understand patterns or how to do an age appropriate puzzle. But at other times I am astonished at how quickly he learns new words or how he remembers minute details of the shows that he watches. For example, he's seen 40 episodes of Umi Zoomi and each episode has a "guest" character who needs help. Five minutes into an episode, Nathan tells me "Michael" and I'm like, our neighbor? Then five seconds later, the show says "It's Michael!" That's crazy memory!

Nathan will now eat a few more items - potatoes mixed with rice, pepperoni pizza, blueberries, muffins and cupcakes with chocolate in them, fried chicken (mostly breading), milk tea

"I'm so excited for my homeschool kit!" Actually I was probably more excited than he was.

My favorite outfit on him

First time at mini-golf. He used two hands for the first hole, then just one hand for the next couple.

Then he just threw the ball in the hole after that.

After the 6th hole, the boys started running around so we called it a day and ordered some fries.

LOL. We met Daniel Tiger. Nathan's reaction when he first saw Daniel, "So tall!"
He was very hesitant about going up to give Daniel a hug even though wanted to. He asked me to hold his hand and go with him, but I encouraged him to go by himself and told him that I'll wait for him to come back. He got up the courage to do it!

He loves milk tea! Takes after Jackson. When he asks for it, he says "Milk Teaf", not sure why he adds an "f" at the end.
